It could be an optical sensor that needs cleaning. Within one minute the Tap 41 (or 43) diagnostic test pattern should be initiated and print. Did that happen? The guy I talked to on the phone was very persistent that I pay the money, but I elected to wait and fix the problem myself. All of the function buttons are flashing. The scanner bar must "know" where it is at all times. There are several possibilities, the main electronics has failed, the scanner head has failed, the white strip it too dirty to be detected, or the scanner head bulb and/or mirror are dirty. i rebooted, shutdown, reinstall etc.. I installed a new Office Depot equivelant cartridge. these let you lift it enough to get to the head. If you run into the same, make sure you also use epoxy to beef up the module as it pops off easy; put epoxy on the top FRONT half and the front side of the module as the plastic circuit goes into the upper rear of the module; you might also use a SMALL piece of duct tape to beef up that plastic circuit board that connects to the housing.
If I hadn't payed so much for this HP POS I would have left it to die a long time ago. After cleaning underside of scanner glass and white strip, make sure you do not smudge or leave fingerprints on white strip or underside of glass when putting back together.
