So it seems it could have been some kind of communication issue. The print server is currently using a driver that has been pulled through windows update and is the suggested/recommended driver.The full error is 'PCL EX error subsystem kernel error illegal operator sequence. Please try the request again. This wouldn't have been a problem - except for having the following printed in place of the expected output whenever I attempted to print: PCL XL error Subsystem: KERNEL Error: UnsupportedProtocol Operator: 0x0 Position: 0 Fortunately, I still had the last known-working version of the driver saved, 5.0.3.37 from December 2009.

The print job is spooled from the machine to the print server and then down to the printer, the printer then prints out on a single page only 'PCL XL error' and fails to print the rest of the pages regardless of the print job size.The printers in question are very old, looking on HP's support site I can see that a universal driver is provided for both it looks like.However we are reluctant to install it on the print server in question and would prefer something more specific.
