Solved! Never again will I buy an HP product. A new cartridge did not fix it. Thanks for the post so I didn't spend to much time trying to fix the damn thing. I have tried every suggestion listed without success. No solution, just concern that this has happened to others.
This seems to be pervasive problem acrossed the product line. For printing only (not copying) you may be able to print in reserve mode by removing the color cartridge. Both cartridges have to be HP, otherwise the message will continue to appear. Any more info on how to do this memory hack thing would be interesting though!

I have done the steps to clean both the cartridge and the inside printer carriage, twice, with no results. Any suggestions? Wipe the ink cartridge connection side with alcohol and a tissue or q-tip and try again.
Reply 0 Re: Cartridge Error: Cartridge on right must be replaced 09-09-2011 03:31 AM The company which supplied this non-HP cartridge has acknowledged that there is a mis-read on the chip and requested I go through their reset process i.e. I tried several fixes, restart, reinstall cartridge, etc. Print a test page. Can take the cartridge to the other printer and it works fine.

This was really bugging me as I don't want to junk a perfectly good printer so I did a bit more digging and found this which did work after the #6 didn't: 1) switch the machine off as normal 2) switch off at the power point and unplug for 30 seconds 3) plug back in and switch on at power point 4) holding down the ‘#' and ‘3' keys switch the machine on. When I removed the color cartridge, it did print test page for me in black, but as soon as I place any cartridge in the green stall, I get the same message "Remove and check color cartridge". I personally assert that since this isn't a wear and tear failure, but some design flaw that eventually appears regardless of how much you use it, then they're honour-bound to replace it regardless of whether it's in the warranty period.

Try that then, and fingers crossed. Your printer is broken, perhaps irrecoverably. It works if I remove the color toner, but keep getting the same message when I put the color toner back in. or is there something else to try?
